I'm Bella and I'm doing a website about the language Portuguese for my class assignment.
You probably don't know this, but languages are dying out at a rate so fast you cannot imagine. The reasons why:
1) The fluent people don't teach it to their children and grandchildren, and when the speakers die, there won't be anyone who speaks it.
2) Dominant languages (English, French and Spanish) come and take over. How? Well, let's take Australia for an example. When the European people came and took over the aboriginals, the aboriginals' languages came to an end (most) because the Europeans would constantly speak English. The aboriginals were forced to speak English, and sadly some were put in concentration camps and the children were adopted by the British and were not taught how to speak their tribe's language, therefore the languages died out and english took over.
Portuguese is an
endangered language, but not as endangered as some other languages. It's really not that endangered, but it's starting to slowly loose speakers, and we don't want to start making a difference when there are barely any speakers left. Some languages have only 6 fluent speakers, and we don't want Portuguese to end up like that. English is taking over. We are losing so many languages and we don't want Portuguese to end up extinct, so we better learn now.
I used to speak fluent Portuguese when I was 2, but I forgot it and I'm trying to learn it again. You can make a difference by learning Portuguese and helping the language NOT die out.
